Batteries

As of February 8, 2006, used batteries are considered household waste and must be disposed at HHW collection centers or to a universal waste handler. Batteries are considered hazardous because they contain metals and toxic or corrosive materials. Additionally, batteries are a good potential resource for recycled metals, although in practice, the industry only recycles rechargeable batteries.

Lead acid batteries are a different class of waste, but must also be disposed at HHW collection centers or at automotive centers with drop-off programs.
